Who We Are
Our dancers come from a variety of backgrounds from all over the Midwest, including four La Crosse County dance studios. We foster a welcoming space for all dancers to share their gifts, celebrating that each of us has something unique to share. Every Affinity dancer has an opportunity to choreograph pieces for our performances.
We have worked with many other groups and venues in the La Crosse area, including the Pump House Regional Arts Center, UW-La Crosse Choral Union, Viterbo University's San Damiano Music Ministry, English Lutheran Church, Old Main Historical and Community Arts Center, and Logan High School.
While propelling our cause-driven mission, we look for innovative ways to make meaningful performance art that relates to and educates our audiences. Past topics have included hunger, friendship, homelessness, family, loneliness, freedom, depression, anxiety/panic disorders, spirituality, discovery, aging, suffering, persistence, and letting go. We have produced 12 full length performances of original works that have included unique elements such as live praise music, live choral music, live a cappella accompaniment, spoken word, site-specific pieces, and props.
We support local businesses, non-profit organizations, and other causes through our thought-provoking work, volunteer hours, and ticket profits. To date, we have raised over $1,000 for local charities, including the Hunger Task Force, Children's Museum of La Crosse, Lutheran World Relief, La Crosse Warming Center, and the La Crosse Area Suicide Prevention Initiative.
What We Do
Welcoming anyone to our free open rehearsals/auditions (about four times per year), we then select dancers to collaborate with on our performances. Affinity dancers provide not only their technical abilities to our pieces, but also their emotions, life experiences, choreographic ideas, and production input. This provides a collaborative, immersive experience for producing the most authentic, creative, thought-provoking work possible.
Each season, we produce four full length performances as well as several outreach performances throughout the community. This allows our dancers to create and perform a variety of works with varying topics, themes, styles, and genres. Dancers have flexibility in the shows in which they participate: some are able to dance in every show each season, while others perform when it works with their schedules.
We strive to create memorable, meaningful experiences for our audiences and community not only through our movement, but also in the way we carry ourselves and give our time and talents away from the dance floor. This group promotes community involvement through movement and service while also functioning as a support system for each other.
Not only do we present creative, thought-provoking work, but also we encourage others to dance with us. Our goal is to provide free performance opportunities to those who wish to dance for their entire lifetime. We are grateful for our generous sponsors and audience members who help us make this possible!
